Sir Michael Stoute’s Patkai has emerged as the favourite for the St Leger in William Hill’s ante-post betting markets.
Patkai’s odds have shortened to 5/2 following indications that neither Frozen Fire nor Tartan Bearer are likely to run at Doncaster on the 13th of September. Oaks winner Look Here is currently priced second at 6-1 , alongside Conduit.
The movement in the betting markets will come as good news to Sir Michael Stoute who is not only looking to win his first Classic of the season, but also his take first ever title at the St Leger.
Patkai last won at the Royal Ascot meeting in June, where he took the Group 3 Queen’s Vase. The thoroughbred’s other win for the season came at Haydock with a first place in the listed Tomboy Cavanagh Handicap.
Patkai’s position at the head of the St Leger betting markets is not only due to recent performances, but to his reputation as a stayer. Patkai has won twice over distances greater than 1 mile 2 furlongs, including an impressive win over 2 miles.
